History Shapes Academy Buildings

Albuquerque Academy was founded in 1955, in the basement of a church on Fourth Street. Shortly thereafter the school moved to Osuna and Edith, Sandia Prep’s current location. At the Osuna location the Academy consisted of three buildings with an additional building for the Head of School’s office. At the time, the student body was made up of about 180 boys with 15 faculty members.

Service continues after the Academy

Take a Saturday, some new t-shirts, a peppy Hippopotamus mascot and a “Can-do” attitude and you have what is known to our school as community service. It is a requirement for all students, but also a rewarding extracurricular for many at the Academy.  And for some, it leads to opportunities later in life.

Max Walla goes straight to the pros

This past June, Max Walla ’09 achieved a feat unprecedented in the Academy’s history. In the 2009 Amateur Draft, Walla was drafted in the second round by the Milwaukee Brewers right after he finished his final season with the Chargers to become the first Academy athlete to go directly to the pro ranks.

The economy and you: student spending habits

Since December 2007, the U.S. has been in a tangible economic slump, trumpeted on every media outlet in the country. It has hit close to home for the Academy, with its dwindling endowment and cutbacks. It would stand to reason, then that students too are feeling the financial burden. The truth is that some students say they have been hit hard by the recession, while others say it has barely affected them at all.

Swine Flu: Preparation

When the H1N1 Flu broke out last spring, the Academy was at serious risk of closing if an outbreak occurred within the community. Due to the uncertainty at the time, the school made several plans in order to ensure that classes could continue, in some fashion, if the school were to shut down.
