Cooper, Pick and boys team take state

The Albuquerque Academy boys and girls tennis teams competed in the New Mexico 4A state championships from May 5 to May 8.
In the boys singles bracket final Thomas Cooper ’11 beat Jeff Adolf ’10, giving Academy the top two spots. The doubles team of Jordan Key ‘10 and David Zumwalt ’12 placed second in the doubles bracket. In the team competition, the boys dominated, not losing a single match the whole tournament.

On the girls team, Lauren Pick ’10 won the singles state championship without losing a single set, giving her the title for the fourth year in a row. Girls head coach Amy Badger said that coaching Pick is a “fantastic feeling.” In the doubles bracket, Ksenia Bosina ’13 and Alice Linder ‘12 got fourth place. The girls team took second overall, losing to Farmington in the championship match.

Winning state this year was the eighth year in a row for the boys. Boys head coach Sean Hopkins said that winning state this year was “great, awesome.” He said that next year, after the current seniors have left, “we’ll be good, [but] not as dominant as this year.” The team will, however, have Cooper returning.

The girls team also will have a hard time replacing seniors, including Pick. She said that she was “nervous going in,” but she ended up winning (6-0) (6-4) in the championship match. Badger said that coaching the team to their second place at state was “very exciting.” According to Pick, “we made it really far…. We fought hard.” According to Badger, with so many seniors leaving the younger athletes will have to step up. She said next year will be “a year of transition.”
